Advocacy and Litigation before International Criminal Courts and Tribunals
Training on Advocacy and Litigation before International Courts and Tribunals, 8th until 12th November 2010
Last week (8-12 Nov), the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies offered a training on Advocacy and Litigation before International Criminal Courts and Tribunals. The training focused on various topics such as characteristics of the international criminal trials, the international criminal court procedural scheme, prosecution practice, modes of criminal liability and theory of the cases. Moreover, practical sessions were included on evidence, cross examination, motion filing and final trial briefs. The sessions were delivered by Mr. Michael Karnavas, Defense Counsel before the ICTY and before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
The participants were also addressed by diverse international criminal court experts such as Thomas Wayde Pittman, Chef de Cabinet to the Acting Registrar of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon; Dr. Mia Swart, Lecturer at Leiden University; Paolina Massida, Principal Counsel of the OPCV of the ICC; and Paul Rogers, Senior Appeals Counsel of the OTP-ICTY. The training evaluations show that most of the participants were very satisfied with the overall quality of the event.
