How to Apply

Interested candidates should apply via the Leiden Law School page here. On these pages you will find the relevant forms and an explanation of all the materials needed to make a formal application.
 
Please note that enrolment is on a rolling basis.
 

Application check list

 
The Leiden Law School will ask you to submit the following documents:
  • A copy of your Masters degree certificate
  • Transcripts of your Masters degree
  • If relevant, proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL 600 paper-based/250 computer-based or 100 internet-based) or IELTS test (7.0)
  • If available, an article in a peer-reviewed journal or in a working paper series. Alternatively, a writing sample (thesis, other papers, professional reports) on a topic relevant to your proposed research
  • If available, a list of publications
  • A proposal for the envisaged research of up to 1,000 words. The plan should contain the following:
  1. Introduction to the research topic
  2. Research questions and/or hypotheses
  3. Table of contents
  4. Literature references
  5. Approach
  6. Time plan
  7. Research plan
  8. Type of doctoral degree sought (monograph or articles thesis)
  9. Language

Once you have sent off your application

  • There will be a formal check (validity of degree certificates etc)
  • The Coordinator will get in touch with appropriate supervisors
  • Successful candidates up to this stage (shortlisted candidates) will be asked to submit a more substantial research proposal
  • The PhD candidate will be admitted as a pre-PhD
  • After approval of the first chapter of the PhD research, there will be a formal admission.
