Marie Curie Research Course 2007-2008

22 October - 2 November 2007 and a follow-up week from 10-14 March 2008

The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies organises the second Marie Curie Research Course on Supranational Criminal Law. A group of seven top researchers with excellent achievements in their international law studies have been selected for this course. '

The first part of the course took place from 22 October to 2 November 2007. A follow-up week will be held in March 2008.

Highly respected academics and practitioners as well as prominent diplomats provide the training and tutoring. 

The main purpose of the Research Course:

The aim of the Research Course is to enable each researcher to write an article of excellent quality on a topic related to Supranational Criminal Law, and to potentially have it published in the Leiden Journal of International Law.

Discussion about the different topics took place during the two weeks programme in October 2007. Between October 2007 and March 2008, the discussion and writing process continues, under the supervision of the Associate Professor in charge of the project, through an internet learning system (Blackboard). 

Themes

The participants are required write an article on a current theme in Supranational Criminal Law Suggested themes were:

- substantive and procedural law issues in national and international war crimes law

- issues of humanitarian and general international law that relate to the functioning and jurisdiction of national and international courts and tribunals

- the treatment of issues of jurisdiction and admissibility in the practice of the ICC

- the charging practice of the ICC (including the selection of situations/cases)

- the status and rights of victims within the ICC

- potential avenues for review of the Statute of the ICC
