John Dugard Lecture Series
Lecture by Prof. Hugh Thirlway
Lecture by Judge Buergenthal
In his address, Judge Buergenthal praised the contribution of Prof. John Dugard to human rights law, both as a legal academic and as professional. Judge Buergenthal placed contemporary developments in international law into a broader systemic perspective. He analysed the dynamic transformation of international human rights law since the 1970s. He further assessed the contribution of international and regional courts to the development of international law and human rights. He expressed the hope that the role of international criminal courts and tribunals will ensure broader enforcement and respect of human rights obligations at the international and domestic level. The address marked the opening lecture of the Advanced LL.M. Programme in Public International Law. The lecture attracted a capacity audience. It will be published in the Leiden Journal of International Law.
